Gogri Hub for Membrane Research at IIT Bombay Inaugurated to Advance Membrane Research

September 2026

The Gogri Hub for Membrane Research at IIT Bombay was inaugurated on 9 September, marking an important milestone in strengthening India’s translational research ecosystem and enabling membrane technologies to move from the laboratory towards real-world applications.

Catalyzed by India’s Translational Research Initiative (ITRI) in partnership with IIT Bombay, the Hub brings together specialised infrastructure and technical capabilities across the membrane technology development pipeline—from membrane fabrication and module development to analytical testing, application-specific development and scale-up. It is designed to enable researchers and innovators to develop, test and validate technologies, while providing industry with the capabilities needed to de-risk technologies and accelerate their adoption.

The inauguration brought together researchers, faculty, industry leaders, startups and ecosystem partners to mark the launch of this shared translational research platform. Discussions highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry by developing technologies that are not only innovative, but also reliable, validated and ready for application.

In its first phase, the Hub will focus on water and wastewater treatment, industrial chemicals and gas separation, healthcare, and electrochemical energy systems, with an ambition to translate 6–7 projects over the next 1–2 years. By bringing specialised capabilities together within a shared facility, the Hub aims to reduce the technical and infrastructure barriers that often limit the movement of promising technologies beyond the laboratory.

The Gogri Hub is part of a broader effort to build translational research infrastructure that serves the wider innovation ecosystem. By creating shared platforms that bring together academia, industry and innovators, ITRI aims to develop models for translational research that can be strengthened and replicated across institutions and technology domains in India.

The inauguration of the Gogri Hub marks an important step towards building the infrastructure and institutional capabilities needed to translate Indian research into validated, scalable and industry-ready technologies, strengthening the country’s capacity to convert scientific innovation into real-world impact.
